Certificate in Cargo Surveying

Cargo inspection, stowage, securing, assessment, surveys and reporting - training course by tutored distance learning

Commences: 23rd November 2016

Delivered by tutored distance learning

This certificate will benefit any professional involved in the carriage of goods by sea because it not only defines and explains the role of the cargo surveyor, but it provides the essential knowledge of cargo characteristics, stowage and securing techniques and marine insurance which are so central to shipping.

The three fundamental categories of cargo surveying are addressed in this programme.

  • Precautionary surveys: Prior to loading cargoes, surveyors may be called upon to inspect cargo spaces allocated for stowage to ensure that the spaces are suitable for the cargo under survey.
  • Damage surveys: When a vessel has encountered heavy weather whilst on passage, a surveyor will be called to attend during cargo operations to act on behalf of either the vessel or the cargo owner (shipper). Any damages incurred by excess rolling, pitching and heaving by the vessel will be assessed prior to cargo items being discharged.
  • Routine surveys: Traditional liner trades usually involve the appointment of surveyors during cargo handling operations as a matter of course. Such surveyors report on the general stowage operation, highlighting such items as ventilation, dunnaging and handling

The Certificate in Cargo Surveying is ideal for those planning to start or specialise in the area, who are looking for key knowledge relating to how different types of cargo are carried, as well as appreciation of the principle responsibilities and skills of the Cargo Surveyor.

The programme is also invaluable for those who, while not practically involved in surveying, work in maritime trade, transport, or insurance, who would benefit from a grounding in the expertise which allows cargo surveyors to play such an integral role in the global carriage of goods.
