The Certificate in Commercial Management and Procurement delivers the essential knowledge and skills required to build and enhance your knowledge of commercial management and strategic procurement - and how these can deliver benefits to the bottom-line immediately through a minimised cost-base and increased business.
By studying this 16-week certificate by part-time tutored distance learning you will be able to:
The first module introduces commercial strategy and commercial management, and explains the importance of developing procurement as a strategic discipline. It also explains about basic theory, methodology and best practices.
This module looks at the next level of procurement, moving beyond basic purchasing to a more strategic process, incorporating methods to bring about innovation, quality and cost improvements. The module also explores supplier appraisal and other forms of procurement (e.g. ethical procurement, category management) in this context.
Reducing cost is a necessary part of the commercial manager and procurement manager’s role. This module delves into the issues relating to effective cost management, using such tools as cost variation, cost estimation, cost monitoring and cost control. The module also explains the nature of cost versus value and cost versus price and operating versus total costs.
This module describes the necessary tools in effective project management, such as stakeholder buy-in, cross-disciplinary communication and a solid business case. It also explores such issues such as technology use, project risks and contingency planning in projects.
This module explores the nature of risk in commercial management. It looks at what organisations can do to identify, minimise, manage and mitigate the risk inherent not only in their commercial operations but also their procurement processes. The module also looks at the different types of risk management tools available to the commercial manager and the concept of enterprise risk management, bringing together the risk management strategies together holistically.
This module explains the tender and proposal processes in their entirety, from the start of the tender process to the end. It details the preparations involved, the different types of proposal encountered and the planning needed to write a value-added proposal with the right costing. It also explains the procedures involved after a proposal has been written, from the review stage, to the assessment and award itself. It is a guide to writing an effective proposal and also ensuring nothing is omitted from the proposal planning stage.
One of the most important stages in commercial management and procurement is building an effective relation with the client/customer/supplier. This is complemented by effective collaboration and shared success. This module explores the nature of good business relationships, how to measure them and how to engage the business partner. In tandem with this, an effective negotiation strategy is most important, and will be discussed at length in the conclusion to this module.

Effective contracts and how these are written, managed and delivered are the cornerstone of effective commercial management. This module explains the nature of contract management, and looks in detail at SLAs; contract disputes; contract specifications; contract change management, amongst others.
