This 12-week distance learning course introduces the key functions of the operations department in shipping organisations.
It provides an essential guide to those working in (or aiming to work in) ship operations, as well as those seeking a deeper understanding of how the global shipping industry functions.
This module covers the maritime regulatory framework related to operations, ship and cargo types, classification, insurance, key roles and relationships and the principles of chartering.
This module intends to familiarise you with the concepts of vessel and voyage operations. After examining the role of the Operations Department, the components of ship’s costs (operating, voyage and capital), as well as the distribution of expenses between the shipowner and the charterer. Then, a detailed analysis of voyage estimations follows. A practical example at the end of this section helps in further elaborating these calculations.
This module takes you through dealing with commercial voyage management, bunker management procurement (or purchasing), handling disbursement accounts, post-fixture issues and analysis including freight collection and checking Master’s General Accounts
This module further deals with the human element of shipping, discussing people management and highlighting the importance of human resources planning. This helps achieve the performance levels needed to take a company to the anticipated growth and profit levels. It is important to monitor performance and evaluate its outcome to check if the company is moving on the expected track or whether it is deviating from it.
This module will discuss the current legislation in effect, and how the industry relies on this legislation. It will analyse different processes and procedures related to safety and security and provide examples of the environmental problems related to port activities, highlighting different methods to limit the negative impacts.
This module will discuss vessel operations from an owner’s perspective. Ship management involves activities that maximise the efficiency and physical condition of a vessel during its working life in compliance with the requirements of industry regulations. These activities ensure that high operating standards are maintained on vessels, thus to manage vessels in the safest possible manner, and in accordance with the requirements of the owners, charterers, flag state administration and the class.
