Allan Larsen
CEng, CMarEng, FRINA, FIMarEST, FCMS

Allan is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Marine Engineer with thirty years of marine industry experience. Allan is registered with FEANI, The Engineering Council, RINA, IMarEST and the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ships Surveyors. 

Of his thirty year career Allan served fifteen years with the major Classification Society Bureau Veritas acting as a ship surveyor (all marks and all notations) and as Head of Section for Casualties, Damages and Repairs. Allan has also achieved certification in many auditing systems including ISO9001,ILO-MLC, ISM,ISPS, ISO 50001, BS18000 and BS 14000. 

Currently Allan is the Managing Director of Larsens Marine Surveyors and Consultants Ltd serving the maritime  insurance, legal , training and, recreation sectors of the marine industry as a surveyor, auditor and expert witness. 

ayman alakkawi

Ayman Alakkawi 

Mr. Alakkawi is an experienced marine engineer with 16 years in the industry. He has sailed for 12 years, moving up the rank from cadet to chief engineer on various ships.

Following his time at sea, Ayman worked ashore, then moved to the University of Trinidad and Tobago as senior maritime engineering lecturer. Most recently, he has been working in the field of maritime education at State University New York as lecturer for U.S.C.G approved courses for professional mariners.

Bharat Hora
Chief Engineer

Bharat has more than 30 years maritime experience. He started his career with the Shipping Corporation of India as a junior engineer in 1980, after graduating from the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training. He continued to rise in ranks, sailing as Chief Engineer for three years with Univan Ship Management, before taking a job ashore as a marine engineering trainer. Since then, he has lived in various countries such as Canada, USA, Singapore, Australia and India, working in senior management positions for a shipyard, a large ship management company, a marine consultancy and a ship services company.

Presently Mr. Hora is working independently as a vessel auditor, maritime trainer and new building consultant. He is a Member of IMarEST and Supply Chain Management Association of Canada and a Life Member of the Institute of Marine Engineers (India) and Institution of Naval Architects (India).

Captain Cliff Brand BSc (Hons), FNI
Marine Consultant, Eagle Lyon Pope Ltd

Captain Cliff Brand started his career at sea as a fisherman in the early 1970’s. By the time he was in his twenties he was serving as skipper on deep sea fishing vessels. After a period of ten years in the fishing industry he took up a career in the Merchant Navy, initially as an Officer of the Watch, progressing to Master on a variety of vessels, serving latterly on board AHTS vessels.

After period of 12 years in the Merchant Navy and a period ashore in ship superintendence, he joined the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch as a Nautical Inspector. During the eight years he spent at the UK’s MAIB he was responsible for investigating more than 60 serious accidents, many involving loss of life. Also during his time at the UK’s MAIB he obtained a BSc Honours Degree in Shipping Operations, as well as Diploma in Marine Surveying. He has travelled extensively delivering presentations and courses on maritime safety.

In February of 2004 he took up the post of Maritime Administrator for the Government of Gibraltar, where was head of the Gibraltar Maritime Administration. During his tenure he was directly responsible for substantial growth of registered tonnage on the Gibraltar Ship register as well as Paris MOU “White List” status recognition. He was also actively involved with the IMO.

In 2008 he returned to the UK to take up the post of Harbour Master / Marine Manager for Harwich Haven Authority after having served for a period of 2 years as Chief Executive of Gibraltar Port Authority where in addition to port business he was involved extensively in marine casualty salvage. Captain Brand is a Fellow of the Nautical Institute, a Younger Brother of Trinity House and has always had a very keen interest in maritime safety and flag state affairs. He left Harwich Haven Authority to take up a consultancy role at Eagle Lyon Pope.

Jason Dimou

Jason is a naval architect - marine engineer and a Naval Officer. He graduated top in his class in 2001 from the Hellenic Naval Academy and he served onboard naval ships as an engineer officer for 10 years. In 2011, he earned an MSc in Mechanical Engineering and a Naval Engineer Degree from MIT. He is a NACE Certified Coating Inspector and the Head of 'Salamis" Naval Base Coating Department. Jason has more than 5 years of experience in training young professionals, naval engineers, and students/naval cadets.

Karl Pizzey

Karl Pizzey is currently the General Manager and Ship Surveyor at ‘Larsens Marine Surveyors & Consultants Ltd’. Having previously been involved in the Further and Higher Education system in a technical capacity for eight years.

Karl is a previous student of the Diploma Course in Small Craft Surveying and completed the course with distinction and now brings first-hand experience of the course, and his subsequent career, training and experience, for the benefit of course participants.

Since completing the course Karl has developed his skills in the marine surveying industry and now holds recognition as an Associate of the ‘Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA)’ and as a member of the  ‘Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors (SCMS)’.

Through the ‘Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors’ Karl holds approval by the United Kingdom Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to perform all workboat code of practice surveys and certification tasks.

In addition to his MCA approval Karl is also an approved Flag State Inspector for all ship types, for the Flag State Administration of Saint Vincent & The Grenadines.

As an employee of ‘Larsens Marine Surveyors & Consultants Ltd’, Karl works as part of a well-established team of experts with extensive experience in the marine industry supported by many decades of technical, regulatory and training experience.

Mike's experience has spanned most areas of shipping including seagoing service, teaching, ship management and marine surveying/consultancy. Having been a teacher for more than 40 years, Mike writes training modules for various shipping related diplomas and continues to give training seminars for shipping related organisations.

Octai Dersamet

You will be taught by Octai Dersamet CENG, who has worked in shipping for over 30 years in engineering, project management, naval architecture and industry training. After completing his MSc in Mechanical Engineering he started working as an engineer for Constanta Shipyard, working his way up to the Senior Mechanical Engineer for CNM Romline. As the Technical Director of Blue Ocean Shipping Company Belize, he maintained an operational fleet of 25,000. He has also worked for Lloyd's Register as Senior Naval Architect for two years and is a fellow of RINA and the IMarEST.

Øystein Wikeby

Øystein Wikeby has over 20 years’ experience as a consultant to the maritime, offshore wind, and oil and gas industries. He spent the first eight years of his career as a consulting naval architect, as the owner's representative managing ship newbuilding, conversion, and docking projects worldwide. He currently works as the Vice President for Docking at PT Meratus Line.

Paul Russell MSc BA (Hons)

Paul completed a traditional cadetship with Cunard Shipping Services before serving on all types of vessels from passenger ships to super tankers during his seagoing career.

His sea service also included medium-speed engines powering small tankers, slow-speed engines driving bulk carriers and steam plant providing power for the first container ships.

Dr Theodosis Mourouzis

Dr Theodosis (Theo) Mourouzis is a Research Fellow at the UCL Centre for Blockchain Technologies (UCL CBT) and the Managing Director of Electi Consulting, a boutique consulting specialising in niche technologies such as AI and Blockchain/DLT.

He has extensive experience in the Shipping Analytics sector and has been working with Lloyd's Maritime Academy on big data shipping analytics education. He has PhD in Computer Science from University College London (Information Security Group), a MSc in Advanced Studies in Mathematics from University of Cambridge and a BA/MA in Mathematics from University of Cambridge.
